ReplyDeleteThanks for creating this blog for IComp. I think we should start some discussions. I would like to invite any researchers who are interested to comment and share their views. First we should start something general. What is industrial informatics? Can anyone tell me the definition and may be what should be inside industrial informatics? Thanks.
ReplyDeletethanks for the post and IComp blog creation:)
ReplyDeleteperhaps there are a number of definitions or interpretations in this matter. howeveer, its clear that two things are combined together: industrial and informatics. IEEE says knowledege based factory automation to enhance industrial fabrication and manufacturing processes. but i dont think it should be necesarily as knowledgebased. in my opinion any kind of help from computer science that improve the industry or manufacturing should be considered as a category in this field. any investigations, development, modeling, simulation, implimentation, and etc. that uses computer science/knowledge to improve the productivity or effeciency of industry fall in this category of science. it might possibley containes subjects ranging from ERP,SCM, Manufacturing information/design/system/automation/... and several numbers of other sub-categories and applications. i beleive in many countries like South korea even for sub-categories like "Manufacturing Information System" there are Faculties or Departments with several experts and Professors.
Thanks for the comments. Can the 'industry' to be expanded into other areas such as service industries such as banking, law firm, etc.? If the 'industry' term is broader than manufacturing sector, what will be our research directions? Is it a good idea to include service industries?
ReplyDeletei believe yes. infact when we speak about ERP as the main category, it includes those enterprises that provide services as well. these enterprises include banks as an example too. any organization that produce poduct or service consider as an enerprise. and so i think there is no doubt that industrial informatics cover a broad spectrum of fileds. manufacturing itself cannot work/survive without logistics, finance, marketing, training, and etc. these services are absolutely necessary and extremely involve with manufacturing itself. therefore, i belive as you mentioned rightfully dear dr. service is within industal and not seperated. maybe in economy science these are seperated due to their own reasons. but i think in doing research thats not a good idea of not considering as we know these days good research topics even are interdiciplinary among really irrelevant-looking fields. but when these sciences combine then they make huge successes such as nanothechnology. a combination of chimestry electronic in someways as per my knowledge.
ReplyDeleteregarding the projects or research direction in service, i think that it is just as same as those one in manufacturing. i mean all these sectors may suffer from insuffecient or inappropriate existing system within them concerns to computer or system sicence/engineering.
ReplyDeletetherefore, proposing a solution to them using computer/system science/engineering would be the answer.
to be more precise, as an example in banking... there would be nice to work on re-engineering the processes, working on integration (there are thousands of sub-categories like web- globalizations and .......many many.....), working on IS (design, modeling...algorythms.....store/retrieval, security, liability.... and many many), etc......
i belive computer sicence itself is just mathematics. it is really something when marry ot other subjects!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your views. So our industrial computing has broader scope than it would seem to many others and even myself sometimes. Is there any different ideas or views? Since industry does not mean only manufacturing, is it better to add another research focus of the industry computing to include other type of industries? What the sentence/words we should add? Currently, there are 8 niche research areas and 5 research focus in IComp as listed in this blog page.
ReplyDeletebefore any information system there is business process management (dcapturing,design/modeling, analysis, re-engineering, etc.. oh and recently MINING). this would be so great because it really plunge into computer/IT concepts.. even ends to writng codes... great field to work on such significant system enginering field.
ReplyDeleteanther one as i mentioned before are regarding enterprise cntrol system which quality control is one of them ... how about maintenace or inventory and information system connecting to web applicaitons.. working on sevice oriented architecture...
i think all depends to our dear profs. and actually depends to their interest too:)
